Matt Drake is an associate in the firm's Knoxville office. Matt’s practice is focused primarily on general liability and workers’ compensation law, but he is experienced in commercial litigation, criminal law, employment law, surrogacy law and veteran disability law.
Matt earned a doctorate of jurisprudence from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 2011. While in law school Matt served as an Articles Editor for the Tennessee Law Review and was a member of the moot court board. Matt also worked as a Research Assistant for Professor Judy Cornett, contributing on multiple law review articles.
Prior to law school, Matt attended Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee where he was a double major in Business Administration and Computer Information Systems. After a two year hiatus during which he served with the United States Army and Tennessee National Guard in the Middle East, Matt returned to Lee University in 2006 to complete his undergraduate studies. In December of 2006, Matt received a B.S. in Computer Information Systems and a B.A. in Business Administration. During his time at Lee University and the University of Tennessee, Matt stayed active in the Cleveland and Knoxville communities, working various jobs and volunteering with multiple organizations. Matt is proud to have had the opportunity to volunteer with several outstanding organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, Saturday Bar, the Boys and Girls Club of America, the Hope Initiative and Wills for Heroes. Matt continues to work with a variety of non-profit organizations and currently serves on the Lee University Business Alumni Board.
In addition to his studies, Matt is proud to have accrued eight years of military service with the United States Army as both an active duty and “part-time” soldier. Matt attended Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. During his training at Fort Knox, Matt was trained as a Scout (19D). Matt utilized his training during an 18 month deployment with the United States Army as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom III. During the deployment, Matt’s unit was involved in assisting the Iraqi government conduct its first democratic election. In the winter of 2005, Matt completed his tour of Duty in Iraq and returned home to his wife, Lindsay. For his service during Operation Iraqi Freedom III, Matt received multiple awards and service ribbons, including the Combat Action Badge. In 2014, Matt accepted commission with the United States Army and was appointed to the JAG Corps. He currently serves as a staff attorney with HHT 278th ACR in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Matt is a dedicated advocate for military veterans. He is accredited with the Department of Veterans Affairs, which allows him to prepare, present and prosecute claims for Veterans benefits.
When not practicing law, Matt enjoys spending time with his wife and son. He is an avid golfer and enjoys spending as much time as he can in the East Tennessee outdoors fishing, hiking and running.
